a poll

When things are utterly crazy, do you find that you're better served by

  • taking a step back, doing something else, and then returning to it later
  • buckling down to the task at hand and pushing through

In other words, should I spend the kids' naptime lying on my bed reading (and hopefully napping myself!) or should I work on my class website, exercise, return client emails, fold laundry, clean the kitchen, and make dinner?

What's your vote? Which is the best strategy in your life?

EDIT: Then again, the question is utterly moot if "naptime"=insane children screaming time.

I use both strategies. I usually try to figure out which is going to make me happiest.
But on really awful sick days we throw in the towel, take snacks into the family room on a blanket, and watch pride and prejudice all afternoon. That's always an option.

For me there needs to be a mixture - a balance. If I just give up on everything and sleep then I only feel that much more behind, which just compounds the problem instead of fixing it. But I do need to take time for myself to unwind and take care of me - especially if I'm sick. And I am learning to let go of the non essentials and stop feeling like I have to do everything in one day.

If I had your list of things to do I would sleep/read and then when I woke up I would clean the kitchen (because everything seems more manageable when the kitchen is clean), make something easy for dinner, and pick either work stuff or exercise after the kids went to bed. Maybe ask my husband to help fold laundry when he got home.(or I could just be honest and say it might just stay in the basket until later in the week when I had time.) I really hope you feel better soon!

I'm all about taking a step back. After I have a little time to myself, I'm a better mother, wife, student, etc. A little re-charge gives me the boost I need to keep plugging along and reminds me that I'm a person too.

Go to bed, sick one!

Take a step back, all the way. For instance, last night I was really upset about something, so instead of going home, doing homework or going to bed, we went on a very long drive and had some good conversation and deep thinking. That really relaxed me and calmed me down so that I was able to do the other things later. But then again, I do have the time to that. But you can always do both!

I always take a break, but I have to promise myself a reward for eventually finishing everything.

I think you should step back and take a break, but I don't think I usually follow my own advice. :) I think if you're stressed, it's better to take a bit of a break and you'll be able to hit it harder once you do.
