Halloween

Happy Halloween!! We had plenty of time to celebrate this year which felt SO different from last year--we had a ward trunk or treat, went to Zoo Boo, the kids had various parties with friends, and then we wound up with the actual trick-or-treating, where we had BEAUTIFUL weather and trick-or-treated for so long that Isaac came home with 15 lbs of candy. What. The. Heck.

Zoo Boo--so fun! We went early so we could see all the animals (the trick-or-treating is very minimal so it was not really a focus). So fun, I really love the zoo.

A dance with friends for the older girls...

Another zoo day earlier in the month with Matty's BFF

Halloween night, before the kids peeled off to go trick or treat with friends (Luke went with his two best friends; the older kids stayed with us and then their friends joined us for a couple hours).

Requisite visit to the creepy doll house, which the kids were visiting via scooter all month.

Our front door, earlier in the month

Abigail and Juliet had lots of different costumes during the month but for one dance they went as Buttercup and Westley (Abigail's friend coordinated his costume with her and went as Inigo).

We pinned Luke's hamster to Abigail's shoulder just before she left. Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't believe they exist.

More from Halloween...

One of Abigail's many costume changes...she went as a skier this time. (She kept going home to drop stuff off...first the rollerblades, then the helmet...by the end of the night it was just the goggles.)

Halloween

One day earlier in the month, I spent a delightful morning with Luke and Nathan picking all the tiny pumpkins we could carry. We brought home sacks and sacks of them (thanks to the research genetics farm...I don't know what they're doing with the gourds other than letting us take tons of them in the fall, but keep up the good work!).

We spent another delightful evening at a local corn maze. Jules, Abigail, and I were there with the 8-12 year-old girls in our church congregation; Neil and the boys came along since it seemed liked a fun thing to do. I was SOOOO glad that they were there, since we split the 30 or so girls into groups and there is no way I would have been able to stay sane and keep my group of girls together in the maze had they not decided it would be fun to let Nathan pick the route and just ran along behind him yelling "FOLLOW THE BABY!"

And he, of course, absolutely loved it. Almost as much as he loves Mommy's pumpkin muffins and Daddy's mulled cider.

That kind of fun can really wear a little laddie out.

Apparently I made these very beautiful baguettes sometime in October. Aren't they lovely? There's a recipe for them (and for the muffins) on my food blog (sidebar!)

My sister Mary Beth drove down to spend Halloween weekend with us--lucky lucky lucky us!!! And of course, fool that I am, I took no photos of her, but I DID take a picture of this gingerbread that she, Jules, and Abigail made while Neil and I went for a run in the woods. So. Photographic evidence that she was there. :-)

She also took every single photo I have of Halloween evening with costumes and the like. You guys, Luke's beard. I died. It was the most adorable thing I have ever ever seen and Mary Beth and I just got all heart-eyed every time we looked at him.

This was the first year that Abigail wanted to go with her friends. Part of me was SO thrilled that she has good buddies to go with, and so happy for her to have an awesome evening with them, but most of me was just sad that she is actually old enough that she's stretching her wings out of my little nest. It's a good kind of hurting. But I was sad enough that I also forgot about taking pictures of her (plus she got ready way before the other kids). She went as Emperor Palpatine again--that child does love her villains!--but ended up washing half her makeup off halfway through and changing to a raccoon. Good thing we had made big shadows around her eyes. :-)

Jules went as a Huntress of Artemis with bow, arrows, wrist protectors, half-cloak, Camp Half-Blood shirt, and lots of very dramatic makeup. :-)

And Nathan was a fireman, and Isaac was a ninja--thank heavens Mary Beth was there to appropriately fashion a ninja headcovering (whatever they are called) out of a T-shirt!

We had lots of fun trick-or-treating...I think this was the first year that we had decent weather!!! Kids even took their coats off near the end and it started raining just as we turned back onto our street. Then it was back to eat the loot, and then we sent the kids to bed and watched the third Hunger Games movie while we ate all of the candy those sweet sweet darlings had saved for us (they asked Neil, Mary Beth, and me beforehand what candy was our favorite and then made a real effort to select those whenever they had a choice. So thoughtful--I was really touched!).

And of course...had to take advantage of those post-Halloween sales because you never know when you might need to take an impromptu nap masquerading as Darth Vader. As my brother-in-law says, sometimes it's hard work ruling a galactic empire. ;-)

Halloween 2009

For Halloween this year, we invited a few other families over for dinner and trick-or-treating. We ended up with nine little girls and three little boys--Abigail and Juliet were in heaven.

We did a potluck dinner beforehand--Neil and I made a couple of soups and then asked the other families to bring rolls and fruit. Then we all headed out for trick-or-treating. Oddly enough, all the little girls were dressed in something involving floating layers of tulle. Can't imagine how that happened...

When we came back, I fried up some whole-wheat scones covered in powdered sugar, and Neil made his famous mulled cider.

And Juliet, taking full advantage of the fact that her parents were distracted, ate candy to her heart's content. She's pretty good at maximizing her mouthfuls, as you can see here.

Of course, she got a good start before the party even began...here she is plotting her assault on the centerpiece.

Anyway, it was a lovely party, and so fun to not only have friends for dinner and trick-or-treating, but to chat with them afterwards while all the kids were happily occupied with dolls and dressups.
And now I need to go because we have some friends from Provo coming over for dinner in half an hour! Busy weekend, but that's how we like it.

photo update

First of all, check out my awesome food blog for a new recipe: lentil soup! I promise you'll like it. Or else you won't. But probably you will, if you have discriminating taste buds. Otherwise you won't. Anyway, check it out.

And secondly...

If you know what the symbols in the middle of the spider are( the Poisson Equation, or the non-homogeneous Laplace equation), you know way too much math. Waaaayyy too much math.

Motherhood has done some interesting things to me. For instance, today at lunch I pretended I was a cheerleader and made up an entire "Let's go, Abigail! Yeah! Good job!" cheer, complete with lots of kicks and arm motions, in an effort to motivate a very upset Abigail to eat. (She was upset because Neil ate her eyebrow. I have no idea where she got that idea, but she insisted that we call him at work and "askie him give it back, Mommy!") So for each bite she took, I would do the cheer. She'd laugh hysterically, then eat another bite and said "Do-y it again!"

Anyway, my point is, five years ago pictures this heinous of me (see the following) would never have made it out into the public arena. For some reason, sometimes when I smile one of my eyelids doesn't quite get the message and it tries to close or wink or something. Once my mom commented that my eighth grade school pictures made me look drunk, and I'd have to agree. They were just that bad.

Also in these pictures I have what Neil calls "duck-bill dinosaur hair" (notice that he did not tell me this last night, and I went to the church trunk-or-treat looking like this. Thanks, honey).

ANYWAY, I had to put these pictures up because I just thought it was so funny that we couldn't get a single decent picture. Yeah. Funny. And stuff.

Ok, I'm done. Oh, and please don't feel like you have to reassure me about these pictures. I'm not fishing for reassurance. I just think it's funny.

Moving on.

Abigail's really into snuggling these days. Especially when the prospective snuggle partner is incapable of retreat.

One of the gazillion Halloween parties we've gone to. Fortunately, Abigail never remembers about her candy after she's slept (it's like it disappeared during her slumber), so Neil and I get to eat it.

Bashing at her friend Elise with balloons. They both thought it was the coolest game ever.

You like-ee her colors, yeah? Yeah? Ok! She make some more. On Baby Juliet! Baby Juliet need some colors too!

Baby Juliet is quite happy without her colors.

All she needs is the hypnotic music of her mobile. It gets waaay more smiles than anything human does.

Although given her expressions when confronted by the human members of the family...can't say I blame her.

But she loves us anyway.

And we love her back.
