Over Memorial Day weekend we wanted to do a dry run (except it ended up being very wet) with all our backpacking gear before embarking on our big summer trips. We thought about going to Garden of the Gods or the Smokies but I kept pushing for Grayson Highlands (which is ridiculously far for a weekend trip, I admit) because the views were soooo gorgeous when I was there a few years ago with the little boys.

Well, this is the closest we got to the gorgeous views--haha! It was so misty and rainy the whole time.

But we still had a great, albeit very wet, trip. Ironically just before we left the area was closed to all backcountry fires because the risk of wildfires was so high...we would have had trouble keeping a fire going!

We had quite an adventure when we first arrived and started unpacking our gear and realized that Neil had grabbed the van key *without* the Thule rooftop carrier key attached to it. Oh man! Not fun at all but thankfully we were able to find someone with a drill and Neil drilled through the bolts and cracked open the cartop carrier so we could get our gear out rather than turning around and driving the 8 hours back home...

So that helped us to be grateful we were backpacking at all, even though the weather was less than ideal!

I was very glad for all the rain gear we'd added for our Scotland trip (and I bought the girls duplicates just before this trip).
It really was a delightful weekend!
